Public Notice

House/Building Numbering

07/14/2016

On 11/19/2002, the City of Sweeny adopted Ordinance No. 100-03 requiring all houses and buildings to be numbered.

The ordinances states, in part, "...all business establishments, residences and public buildings with the City of Sweeny, Texas, shall be numbered in accordance with the system provided by the City of Sweeny, Texas, and shall have placed on the front of the building a street number of a size and color legible enough to be seen by the public from the street in front of the building..."

The City still has quite a few buildings and houses that are not numbered. The police department is going door to door handing out warning notices. If you receive a notice, you have 30 days to affix a street number corresponding with the number of your address on the front of your building/house. Should you fail to place such numbering within 30 days of the notice, a citation may be filed against the home/business owner.

It is our sincere hopes and wishes that these warnings are heeded and no charges have to be filed in this matter.  Our intention is to help our public safety entities (POLICE, FIRE, EMS) locate houses/buildings much quicker when responding to calls (potentially life-threatening calls where seconds could make difference between life and death.)

For more information, please contact the Sweeny Police Department at 979-548-3112 or contact us via e-mail at info@ci.sweeny.tx.us.

Monarch Butterfly Habitats to be Built in Sweeny

City Partners with Phillips 66 to Help Restore Declining Population

11/13/2015

Keep your eyes open for some unusual gardens popping up in Sweeny.  At first glance they may look a little wild and weedy, but they have a very special purpose --- saving the threatened monarch butterfly.

Phillips 66, the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), and the City of Sweeny are working together to help restore the declining population of monarch butterflies by planting gardens that contain milkweed, the iconic black and orange butterfly's favorite breeding ground and fueling station for their extraordinary annual migration and life cycle.  This all comes as part of a grant through Phillips 66 and the NRPA.

Sweeny and Phillips 66 are planting three monarch butterfly gardens in the City of Sweeny. They will be located at:

  1. Backyard Park

  2. Exa Mae Keller Park

  3. TJT Memorial Walking Train (MLK Park)

For more information about how local parks and recreation are helping to save the monarch butterfly, visit www.nrpa.org/parks4monarchs/.

Changes to Sweeny's Utility Procedures

10/22/2015

Beginning November 1, 2015, the City of Sweeny will no longer be lighting water heaters, furnaces or other gas appliances.  Due to change in procedures, City of Sweeny employees will no longer come inside your home or business to check for gas leaks or to assist with lighting appliances.  We will only check for gas leaks at the meter.

Also, beginning November 1, 2015, if you have been on the broken agreement list you can get off the list if you make 12 consecutive months of on-time payments – which means you pay your bill in full on or before the 15th of each month.

If you are unable to pay your utility bill and are subject to being disconnected there is a private organization that is available to assist if you meet their criteria.  Please call City Hall for contact information.

Copies of our procedures for disconnection day and agreements are available for your review at City Hall (or view them below):
